Room with a View

So Nathan arrived safe and sound in San Salvador this morning. After a twenty dollar cell phone call we discovered the wonders of gmail video chat and built in computer cameras.
This is the view from his room:
He has the day to kind of orient himself and get to know the people he is traveling with. Tonight they are all eating dinner together and tomorrow starts the real sight seeing. Throughout the whole week he will be visiting a number of coffee plantations and seeing the crops at the height of the season. I think he'll be doing some cupping too. I'll do my best to keep a running log of his adventures too, but be sure to check his blog too, www.2ndcrack.com

Warning: Contents Cute

I swear to you that this will be my last "oh look at my babies" post for a while. I've got a great refinery story to tell you as soon as I find a good enough picture to accompany. I'm just hyper aware that my stay at home mom-ness days are severely numbered and I'm milking it (haha) for all it's worth. And besides, these kids are my secret weapon for conquering the world (and paying for my early retirement). Really, it doesn't get any cuter than this:

Check out that double chin! We really have the eating thing down now and aren't too worried about her wasting away.  Simon has been trying to teach his new sister all the important games, like Your Nose Goes "Honk, Honk, Beep, Beep," and Always Laugh When You Fart. Important stuff here.
Morgan and Zoe have been busy with school, karate and ballet but are just as cute as ever too.T I need to be better at getting the camera out when they are home too. We were all at the grocery store the other day, which is one of those activities that drives fear to my bones (which little one goes in the cart and who is going to have to keep an eye on Simon and if I put him in the cart too where are the groceries going to go and Zoe wants a cookie but it's almost dinner time and when it's all said and done where the heck did I park the car?) and three separate people came up to me to tell me how nice my family was. I was just glad they didn't see us in the check out line.
Mostly, I'm struggling with the impending return to work. I know Isla is our last baby and I just want to stuff every single memory of this time with her in my brain. Her tiny feet, ears and hands, her first smiles, how she holds my finger while she nurses. I love these moments. I barely remember Zoe's, and have to look at photos to recall just how tiny she was (six pounds).  Simon seems like he was tiny just a little while ago, but when I look at him now, it's the trademark Simon-ness that I want to never forget. The goofy smile and ridiculous laugh. This boy loves his baby sister ferociously. Isla is HIS baby, so don't get too close.
Although lately there has been a little bit of jealousy from him. He can't stand for her to have a pacifier and not him as well, so we haven't been able to wean him from those yet. And he loves her chair.  He steals these two items every chance he gets.
This stay at home mom stuff is pretty great, even if I do lose my mind on occasion and miss the smell of crude oil in the mornings (cough cough). Mostly I miss doing a few things for me, like taking the time to style my hair. Or brewing the perfect mocha. I'm starting to find ways to fit a few of these things in, like running in the morning and on dance nights there is a whole hour of me alone in a cafe. I'll miss being able to take Zoe to the bus and being here when she gets home, and I'll miss hearing Simon run around the house like a boy on fire trying to catch the kitty. I'll miss baby yawns in the afternoon and five thousand readings of Good Night Moon by nap time. But me going back to work, even just part time, will mean us getting into a bigger house where Simon can have his first bedroom (not ours!), and I can make a nursery for Isla, and Morgan can have a space all her own. I think Zoe just wants to make sure that she will be able to play outside still, and ride her bike, she would sleep in the kitchen if she had too. And once we get all settled, I'll have an office to work from home!
But for now it's all about how cute my kids are and how much I love these days with them.

Today

I am going to file our taxes.
That is all I have to say about that.

Sunny Perspectives

This past weekend we had one of our favorite types of weekends. SUNNY! I have a theory about Northwesterners and the first sunny weekends of the year, but I won't get into that now...
Instead, take a look at what we did:
We actually did a little more than just walk in the sun. We found a fun rental in the neighborhood that we have fallen in love with over the last year. It's a tiny little house though, and I think we are going to try to find something bigger, being a family of the size that we are. We also managed to lose more of these:
This girl is going to be eating things straight from the blender if she keeps this up. We also washed our babe(y) mobile (read:old van we desperately wish was sporty in some way), and ate crab legs for dinner one night, but our favorite part was definitely the Lake Samish hike.
I had Isla in the Snugli carrier which made things a little more complicated. The trail is a decent incline and going up wasn't so bad, but the going down was tricky. I couldn't see my feet over the baby.
After the hike we did another one of our favorite things, this one not as good for our health, but who cares!
There was something about being outside in the crisp air this weekend that rejuvenated us in the best way. It's been easy to be frustrated lately at our situation and wish we were somewhere different. But being together on a hike in the sun shook that loose for a little bit, and we are better now. Still longing for change, but in a manageable way. This is a recurring theme for us - put water, with sunshine, and some proximity to our whole clan and we get filled with those little reminders of God's love in a big way.  If I remember right, I think it's called hope.

Good

What makes a good day?
2. You get at least 50% of your To Do list done.
3. Both babies nap at the same time in their own beds.
4. Your husband gets a raise.
5. You get to see old friends from work.
6. You get to pay some bills (eh).
7. You even get a run in on the treadmill.
8. Your husband gets an all expense paid trip to El Salvador!

Work is as Work Does

We are into another week of fun out here in Custer.
I say that rather sarcastically, but for some reason there isn't a "sarcastic" font option so I'll understand if you didn't get it off hand.
We had our 87,547,679,005th doctor's appointment this morning. This time it was a double appointment for Isla and me. We have officially seen the doctor more times in the last year than we have seen our dearest friends. I'm not sure if that speaks negatively on our health or on our current living situation (Custer - not exactly the city center). But either way, I was excited to hear that I don't need to bring the baby back for another two months. That would be the longest stretch for us in over a year. But then Nathan reminded me that he is getting a vasectomy next month, so no reprieve yet! Ha! We really like our doctor though, he has done our last two pregnancies and baby deliveries and all of the crazy stuff in between. He's stitched Nathan's hand back together, and fixed my back after I ice skated down some stairs. If we ever do end up moving somewhere other than Whatcom County it will be really sad to have to find a new family physician.
Isla is still gaining weight nicely, and getting to look like a regular round baby! It was still hard to see her have to get shots in her scrawny boney thighs though, and boy did she protest. I don't think I've ever seen a baby hold their breath so hard and turn so red. I was going to take a picture of it, but thought that it might seem insensitive to grab my camera instead of comforting Isla.
The remainder of the day is going to be filled with other fun tasks like cleaning a disgusting car seat cover (how do kids get the most disgusting things smeared into their car seats when there is a no food in the car rule???), washing 5000 loads of laundry, sanitizing the kitchen and organizing the bedroom/office/toddler room.
I kind of miss the refinery.

Another one Down

So today we are selling our Tracker. This is good because it's one less bill we will have to pay and a little extra money we can use to get into a new house. Yay!
Last week I finally got a hold of the people I used to work for at the refinery to see if they had any work for me in the near future. Unfortunately it looks like the economy has started to hit big oil too. No work yet, but my contract company might have some things I can do part time. I hope. I also found some prospective jobs in Oregon. It seems like Oregon has lots of Industrial Hygiene positions (ok so lots might be an overstatement, but some is still good right?). I'm just not sure if we are in a place where we can up and move our family out of state. On the other hand we have some pretty great friends in Oregon so it's not like we would be totally alone.
Things to ponder.
Nathan is trying to get me to be productive, so I had probably get going. I'll leave you with more baby pictures though...just in case you needed to be smothered in cute.

Big!

Isla had her weight check last night and weighed in at 9 pounds 6 ounces! The nurse explained to me that there can be a variance in the scale at the doctor's office and the scale at WIC, I just didn't realize that they could vary that much. So Isla is doing great and getting BIG!
She is also two months old now, and doing lots of this:

Don't Ask

Isla's weight check was postponed until tonight, but at Simon's Dr. appointment I snuck her onto the scale which showed no weight change for the week. This is getting stressful!
Our doctor said that as long as she is over her birth weight he wasn't worried. She is at 8 pounds 14 ounces. I think the only thing that bothers me is people's comments. We can't take her anywhere without people asking me why she is so small. There are a lot of very passionate pro-breast feeding people in our area,  and I've been breast feeding and pumping and supplementing. Everywhere I go there are posters that say babies are born to be breast fed and Breast is best.I'm trying really hard.  She's just not a chunky baby.  Mom's of premies must hate explaining their babies sizes over and over.
Anyways, enough rant.

P.S.

and P.S.
It snowed again yesterday and this morning.
Luckily, the old batch had mostly melted, and this batch was nice and small, only an inch or two!

the rest of the story

So the rest of the story is simply that it was Simon's Birthday. Only the poor boy was stuck in a tie and ballroom for the entire day. The wedding was beautiful though, and I even gave a toast without vomiting or even blushing! All three of us girls had our hair done at a salon, and every one looked fabulous.
From Christmas Birthday and a Wedding 08
The next day we celebrated Christmas and Simon's birthday with Nathan's side of the family.
I don't know if I've told you, but Simon is obsessed with cows. Any animal larger than a dog is classified by Simon as a cow and he will argue his case till death if you try to tell him otherwise.
As for Isla, things have been going up for her too. She has finally passed her birth weight and now weighs in at 8 pounds 14 ounces. I guess the goal is to gain an ounce a day and continue to go in for weight checks every Tuesday.
She is seven weeks old now, almost two months! Does she look bigger to you?

Snow, Christmas, More Snow, a Birthday, a Wedding, a New Year, and More Snow

I think the title fills you in on everything.
We live in the great Pacific Northwest, where it rains, right? We usually don't get much snow, and if it does snow it is melted within a day. Only these last few weeks it has snowed nearly every day. At Christmas we had over two feet of the stuff!
From Christmas Birthday and a Wedding 08

Nathan was really thrilled. Note the hood is up on our van in the background. Not only did it snow, but it got down to the single digits, before the windchill. Our van wasn't thrilled with that either.
Zoe had her friend from school come over durring the big snow and we (I) made cookies to decorate. This is something that I used to do with my neighbors (pseudo brothers and sisters) every year.

The sprinkle to cookie to frosting ratios were of the understanding only to those under the age of six. But don't worry, we left insulin shots for Santa with his plate of cookies.

We started a new tradition at Christmas too. On Christmas eve the kids got to open one present of new pajamas to sleep in.

And then there was Christmas morning.

Which was a big hit.

I mean, a really really big hit.

The next big day was a super big day. My pseudo sister (cookie decorator extraordinaire) got married. Zoe, Morgan and I were all in the wedding. It also happened to be our big guy Simon's second Birthday.

But now it's time for breakfast (Dutch Babies) so I'll fill you in on the rest later!
